Marijuana Doctors' Stance on Mixing Coffee And Cannabis

Today medical marijuana is legalized in more than half of the U.S. states. And marijuana doctors continue to provide recommendations for managing health ailments.

Researchers are exploring the medicinal and therapeutic potential of marijuana, along with how it interacts with other substances. However, the effects of coffee and marijuana in combination on our body is still a few steps away from drawing any concrete conclusions.

Let’s find out what does the research says.

Do Coffee And Marijuana Counteract Each Other?

The research on how caffeine and marijuana interact with each other is still in the early stages. However, from what we know, it can be said that they use different effects when used simultaneously than separately.

Coffee acts as a stimulant, whereas marijuana may act as a stimulant or a depressant, depending on its kind and cannabinoid composition. In simpler words, caffeine would produce a re energizing effect on your mind and body, while the experience with marijuana may vary.

Thus we can say that caffeine and marijuana may or may not cancel out each other.

What Happens When You Mix Coffee And Cannabis?

Although we do not have a solid indication of whether cannabis and coffee cancel out each other. Two animal-based studies suggest that mixing these two may enhance the effects of marijuana at certain doses.

Caffeine May Enhance The Effects of Marijuana at Low Doses

A study based on squirrel monkeys who were given different doses of THC and MSX-3, a chemical which produces similar effects to caffeine. Suggested that low doses of caffeine can enhance the effects of marijuana, while higher doses could produce a counter effect.

However, this conclusion is based on animal-based models, and more evidence is needed to affirm it.

Memory Reparation

Caffeine present in coffee helps you to feel more alert and produce clarifying effects. Many of us drink tea or coffee, or other energy drinks in the morning to kick start the day.

Experts suggest that caffeine could be involved in improving working memory. Marijuana doctors on the other hand imply the opposite effects of marijuana on memory.

Naturally, you would think that both would cancel out each other, and it’s a well-working pair. However, that isn’t the case here.

A 2012 study looked at how marijuana and caffeine in combination could affect the memory in rats. The results suggested that caffeine and low doses of THC could impair working memory while higher doses of THC didn’t produce such effects.

Are There Any Health Risks Involved in Mixing Coffee And Marijuana?

There aren’t yet any reported cases that involve any side effects of combining coffee and marijuana. But that doesn’t mean they do not exist.

You can have different reactions upon consuming caffeine and marijuana together. That’s why it’s important to understand how these two react with your body when consumed together. For an instance, if you are sensitive to THC, combining it with caffeine could get you excessively high, which could be unpleasant.

Even if you are planning to combine caffeine and marijuana, make sure to go slow, and consume smaller quantities.
